Laurent Perrier Brut Rose from Coupes

The other night Bethany and Adam had us over for a delicious meal of chicken kabobs while we tasted through a number of wines. We got things started with a bottle of kosher Laurent Perrier Brut Rose, and I'm not ashamed to say we enjoyed drinking it out of coupes-- the "old-fashioned" style of Champagne glass. These have fallen out of favor in the wine connoisseur community, the argument being that they allow the carbonation to escape too quickly and diffuse the aroma too much for you to get maximum enjoyment, For a long time I accepted this thinking, but still when I watched Brideshead Revisted and saw those 20's characters enjoying coupe after coupe of Champagne, I wondered if maybe I was missing out on something.
I admire the look of the coupe, but had never had a chance to
actually drink from one, until this dinner. I am happy to report that drinking Champagne from coupes is a very nice way to do it, and I will definitely be repeating it.
Why do I like the coupe? First of all, I think that coupes are very cool
looking. Both the flute and the coupe are elegant, but I prefer the look
of the coupe.
But it's not just aethestics that makes the coupe enjoyable, for me they offer many practical advantages. For starters, my nose is simply too big to stick in a flute, and so not only do I miss out on some of the aroma, I always feel a little awkward sipping out of a flute. Not a problem with the coupe.
I found the loss of effervesce with the coupe hardly noticeable if
noticeable at all. It probably helped that the glass size was fairly
small so the wine didn’t linger long in the glass. This also made
heating not much of an issue.
The only drawback with the coupe was more frequent spillage, but even a little spilled Champagne is not worth crying over.

I think the coupes are vogue. The aspect of being able to really take in the champagne's nose was very appealing, and quite different than the usual flutes people tend to serve their champagnes in. However, I prefer to drink my champagne in regular wine glasses as to get the full aroma. But the coupes were interestingly different.
