Two new official releases today from the Golan Heights Winery, their 2008 Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines. 2008 contines to show itself an exciting, quality and cellar worthy vintage for fine wines.

Golan Heights Winery, Cabernet Sauvignon, Yarden,2008: Super-dark garnet with a royal purple robe, full-bodied with still-gripping tannins, those in fine balance with wood and fruits. On first attack a generous array of currants and blueberries, those yielding to spicy plum and near-sweet cedarwood, and, on the long finish, a broad array of spices. Approachable now but best 2012–2022. NIS 127. Score 92. K
Golan Heights Winery, Merlot, Yarden, 2008: Oak-aged for 14 months in 40% new barrels. Dark garnet in color, a powerful Merlot but one that holds its muscles in check nicely to show off its silky smoothness. On the nose and palate blackcurrants, purple plums and espresso coffee, those on a background of toasty oak and mocha, the tannins and fruits rising nicely on the long finish. Drink now-2017, perhaps longer. NIS 109. Score 91. K
