... all I have in my wine fridge is great bottles. If I just want a simple glass of wine I have to break out some rarified stuff.

Scott, Hi.....
One minor comment - I think you really mean "inexpensive" or "affordable" wine. The word "cheap" describes just that... and if that's the case why not Mad Dog?

well where are you buying is a big question for those who don't know already? if in the US what state?
and how cheap are you talking
25 NIs or some the the two for 25 NIS specials I've seen from time to time
if in Israel, one of the best buys is Cabernet/ Petite Sirah at the Tishbi Winery in Binyamina wher ethey have a refill station where you can get their entry level 25 NIS wine for 19 per liter or 14 per 750 ml bottle if you bring your own bottle
I guess this is very popular in Europe too from what I hear but it doesn't do much for export
for everyone there's going to be a different definition of how low will you go and the other question is "just kosher" but most of the non-kosher wineries don't have cheaper wines as they're smaller amd their margins and equipment don't justify the wine often found in the 50,000 liter tanks at the 30 largest wineries
I enjoy several Recanati, Tishbi and Dalton wines in addition to the list above but in Israel there's definitely more of a selection than in the US and in greater NY-Tri-State area there is a much better selection than anywhere in the US
so many Israeli wineries really have poor distribtion in the US partly because distribution in the US is state by state execept for only biggest distributors such as Southern Wine & Spirits or Young's
it's a great question, being in the industry and that I can often buy wine wholesale from wineries or from wine shops I've become friendly with
a better question might be how can someone buy my wine cheaper than I already am and I can give a few ideas on that upon request...

Rogov, you're right, I who rails against MD 20/20 should be more precise, I need quality wines that are inexpensive. Perfect example of what I need are wines like the Le Mourre D'Lisle Cotes du Rhone you recently rated.
David, for me the "sweet spot" is $10-15 bucks (but hey, I'll go lower than that if it's a nice bottle). I feel this is one area where European wines shine, the more pretigious wines may be really pricey, but they're also good at making very competent $10-15 wines that are more sophicated than some New World regions like Cali can make in that price bracket, IMO.
I totally agree with you on Recanati, but with Tishbi and Dalton, I find the pricing in the US kind of bumps them out of the cheapie weekday category. For example, the basic Dalton Estate wines are now about $23-$24, and the lower Canaan series are about $17. I also have an addendum to your comment, Chicago also has a great selection of Israeli wines if you go to the right store(s)
Stop by sometime if you're ever in this part of the country.
Best,
Scott
