Be'er Sheva Wine Festival: Any News?
Be'er Sheva Wine Festival: Any News?
Sat, 08/29/2009 - 1:21pm | Report Abuse
Anyone have contact information for the Be'er Sheva Wine Festival
What a surprise that there's barely any information in English about this festival on the internet and it's this week Thursday night.
well why they should be any diffeent than any wine festival in Israel?
I wish at least the wineries would go to the trouble of posting information about festivals they attend online for English writers and for English speaking tourists.
If anyone attended the Herzlia White Wine Festival and the Jerusalem Festival they should wake up and see that English speakers love these kind of events and imagine the turnout if you actually made the events user friendly.
If I find anything out I'll try to share. I try to promote every Israeli Wine Festival but I wish the organizers would step up to the plate.

David, Hi....
I posted about this festival on my own forum as long ago as 14 July. What I wrote then was:
"Be'er Sheva may not be at the center of the universe, but it is a city that surprises many by the number of sophisticated people who live there. It has also surprised by hosting two thoroughly successful wine fairs, the first in 2007 and the second in 2008. The third Be'er Sheva wine festival is now scheduled for Thursday, 3 September and will be held between the hours of 18:00-24:00.
The festival is still in its planning stages and those wineries that have already agreed to take part include Barkan, Segal, Carmel, Tzion, Tabor, Tishbi, Teperberg, Yaffo, Cahanov, Tsfat and Lavie. Others are in the negotiating phase and I shall of course post a fuller list and full details on precisely where the festival will take place as we approach to the actual event Perhaps not worth a special trip from Haifa or Jerusalem but certainly very well worth attending for those in the southern parts of the country."
As to further information (e.g. contacts), alas I have none but that is not the fault of the wineries. That fault lies fairly and squarely on the shoulders of the fair organizers and their public relations firm, for they have issued no further information since I first posted and my requests for updates have been ignored.

Daniel,
I had saeen your post before I made my comments. It's one of the few and most informative updates I read about the festival but several key questions remain for the public.
1) what is the cost of entry and what does that price include?
2) How many wineries will be there? How many kosher wineries for the kosher consumer?
3) Will food be served and what and idea on prices?
4) Most importantly, where will it be located?
5) How many people attended last year and how many are expected this year?
As for the roles of the wineries in promoting the event, each winery is making a significant investment in manpower and wine in participating it would behoove them to make the most of that investment and not rely on the organizers and also to inform even their regular customers nevermind their probable target for these events: new customers who may never have tried their wines or had just tried their entry level wines.
I posted my comments here as a way of soliciting a response and information from them but I'll try calling around this week and see what I find out and try to post it,
I believe the organizers and their minions have the primary role of promoting the event however the wineries must already know where they're going to on THIS Thursday and I would have thought by doing a google search on the event some of their websites would have appeared. When I worked for a small winery in San Diego we posted all events we were attending on our own site.
It's an indication of how in many ways the Israeli wine marketplace has room to mature. It's not just a matter of whether or not Israel is making good or great wine (it is makiing wuality wine though there is lesser wine in the market every good or great region produces "wine for the masses" whether it be Bordeaux, Tuscany or Napa) becoming recognized as a significant region is as much a matter of marketing prowess as it can be about making quality wine.
I hope as writers about wine we can help pave the way to create and communicate the demand for more advance notice and information about the festivals.
Vinoexpo information in Eilat and the upcoming Tel Aviv event would be good to post sooner than later as well.

maybe one service this site could provide is a more prominent listing of upcoming Israeli wine events in Israel and in the Diapsora
a seperate tab or menu item might be warranted

Finally, details on Salute 2009. the wine festival to be held in Be'er Sheva this Thursday, 3 September. As I wrote earlier, Be'er Sheva may not be located precisely at the center of the universe, but it is a university city that surprises many by the number of sophisticated people who live there. It has also surprised by hosting two thoroughly successful wine fairs, the first in 2007 and the second in 2008. The third Beer Sheva wine festival is now take place between the hours of 19:00-24:00. The fair will take place on the grounds of the Museum of the Negev (Rehov Atzma'oot on the corner of Rehov Herzl)
Wineries scheduled to participate include The GolanHeights Winery, Barkan, Segal, Carmel, Tzion, Tabor, Tishbi, Recanati, Teperberg, Yaffo, Cahanov, Tsfat HaAtika, Tzuba, Psagot, Agur, Saslove, Tulip, Galai and Lavie. Several importers (among those HaCarem, Shaked, Netivi HaYain, and Ackerman) will also be offering wines for tasting.
Also on hand for tasting and purchase will be cheeses from Meshek Ya'akobs and several brands of olive oil and chocolate.. Available for snacking will be a variety of meats, tortillas and chocolates.
Admission to the fair will be NIS 30. Perhaps not worth a special trip from Haifa or Jerusalem but certainly very well worth attending for those living in or visiting the southern parts of the country.

of course I would as I hope everyone would... it would be a great service to the industry if there was an ongoing list of events in and out of Israel and if people can contribute their history with the event ( I went last year and it was lame or great that would be helpful steering people to better events... reviews after the event would also be helpful)
