Israeli Whites

I am a huge supporter of Israeli wines. There are so many great wines coming out of Israel now that we are able to create a forum and talk openly about them. Times are good for Israeli wine. However, I am still having a hard time finding Israeli white wines that compare to other kosher white wines. Of course, Castel C Blanc is outstanding. This is by far my favorite kosher white wine made. Outside of the Castel, I am having a hard time finding Israeli whites that suitable. For example, the Herzog winery in California produces a long line of truley enjoyable white wines at great prices (i.e. Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauv Blanc, Countour, White by W).

Does anyone have any suggestions for Israeli whites that I should try??

Hi Lee

I have tasted many white wines at events as well as at home some of my favorite are from

Mony Winery - They have am amazing Chardonnay.

Tishbi - Has some very nice white wines as well.

Also I just had an amazing Chardonnay from Shiloh Winery that was only 20 bucks.

Let me know what you think of these.

Don't have a lot of experience with Mony but I've talked to some people who've loved their wines and others not so much. Which Chardonnay is good, the Reserve? I've also seen the Semillon-Chardonnay blend from them in the regular series.
I've been a fan of the Israeli Viogniers I've had: Galil, Yarden, and Dalton.
A couple years ago we found this case of Tishbi Special Reserve Chardonnay 2000 that was hidden and forgotten under some different cases. We closed them out in the store for a major discount, just assuming they were on the "drink now or forever hold your peace"-side, but we eventually opened one and it was really a great Chardonnay, a rich wine and richly oaked style, but not overly so, in the vein of Castel C Blanc, which is of course another great one.

If kosher is not a requirement I recommend some of the Israeli whites from small boutiques there. Full Disclosure: I import these! Pelter's Sauv Blanc and Unoaked Chard for instance, represent what the Galilee does to Sauv Blanc and Chardonnay. Really something.

Two Shabbats ago, I contributed to the lunch meal for the white wine (which the ba'al habayit said a Tov uMeitiv, which his brother, I, and another guest all of us having already drunk a revi'it of at least the red wine that I brought for the Kiddush - Binyamina Special Reserve Merlot, 2006 [highly recommended!!]) the Tabor Chardonnay, 2007 (Tabor Winery is one of the very few Kosher Israeli wineries who did "not do t'shuvah" and switch over to Otzar Beis Din for the 2008 vintage). My friend's visiting brother really appreciated the Tabor, and he noted some lactic acid notes, and some butteriness, despite it being an unoaked wine, aged minimally in stainless steel vats. I have tasted this wine several times, and also noticed a bit of development in its complexity.

Question particularly for DR on the Tabor Peninim/Pearls White, 2008. Do you know which grapes are used for this? I have checked the bottles, and asked a Tabor representative in person and have not gotten any answers whatsoever. I also just checked the Hebrew website, and the same exact details are displayed for this wine as that for the Tabor Peninim/Pearls Red, 2008, meaning that nothing changes in the details between the links especially on the grape being "Merlot." The English website of Tabor seems to be outdated as the Tabor Pearls, 2007 (last summer's success, limited release was only a red wine to be served cold) is the only one connected with this series on the website. Thanks much in advance.

Best wishes,
E.Y.

E.Y. Hi....

Frankly, tasted the two wines. Unusual for Tabor,I found them so lacking in charm that I did not contact the winery to ask about the grapes.
