The Jerusalem Wine Festival: Impressions?

Mon, 08/10/2009 - 2:11pm | Report Abuse

Hi Winos,

Who got a chance to visit and indulge themselves at the Jerusalem Wine Festival August 4th, 5th and 6th at the Israel Museum?

I went two nights Tuesday and Thursday and was thrilled with the energy, turnout and the the overall production though even in two nights I didn't get to taste ALL of the wines.

Allthough, I would have been thrilled if some wineries had brought more of their high end wines, 60 NIS for unlimiting tasting of over 100 wines should come with reasonable expectations and I was happy to meet so many winemakers I respect face to face.

What were some of people's favorite wines from the event?  There were some hidden gems under some of the tables but I'm sworn to secrecy less I make the wrong people jealous for not getting a taste.

One stand out wine I hadn't had before was Ella Valley's EverRed.

In the craziness of the masses it was hard to give any wine a proper tasting without sensory overload.

If you didn't go you can check out my blog on travelujah.com and see some pictures...

I hope to post more pictures as the week goes on.

and since we're talking about festivals who went to the white wine festival in Herzlia and what did you think? I have pictures on the site about that too.

Hi David,

Since I don't live in Israel I am not up to date on all of the wine events in Israel. I've heard of this event, but don't know much about it. Can you tell me a little bit more about the event. Where in Jerusalem is it located? How many wineries attend? How long does it go for?

Unlimited drinking for 60NIS sounds like a great deal!

Hi Dan,

I can try to tell you what I know. It's run by to Jerusalem wine shops partnered with the Israel Museum and last year it was in the middle of July and this year it was Augiust 4,5 and 6th so it goes for three nights.

it costs 60 NIS (last year it was 55 NIS) and it includes a nice tasting glass you can take home. There were over 30 wineries and 100 wines and a small live jazz band with vocals. It's held in a nice statue garden behind the museum and goes from about 7PM to midnight each night.

thousands attend each night and it seems from walking around it's mostly Anglos who attend though the program and most of the advertising for he event is in Hebrew (i can only imagine how many more people might come if they promoted it better in English)

the wine shops sell wines being tasted on the way out by the bottle and the wineries pay for their booth and donate the wine they pour

check out my wine blog on travelujah.com and see the pictures including some of Israel's best winemakers

I am finally over my jet lag so here is my take on the 2009 Jerusalem Wine festival.  I hope you find it as interesting, it took a ton of time to write Smile.  Also, it is a bit non politically correct with my kashrut digression, but I would love to hear what all the frum folks think about my questions.  Finally, I loved the event and I hope my feelings come through in the article.

As always best wishes!

I know that Ovadia Yosef and Yitzhaq Yosef's Yalkut Yosef hold that it actually doesn't matter even with an open bottle/container until it wine actually comes out/is poured. If I am not mistaken, I think this is also the p'saq of the Mishnah B'rurah.

Best wishes,

E.Y.

My good friend this is not the case - as much as I would wish it to be so.  First of all Rav Ovadia clearly states that a simple touch of the bottle is all it takes, and for this reason recommends that a religious person be the only one to pour the wine, thereby alleviating any embarrassment that may come out.  Also, the Mishna B'rurah is on Orach Chayim, while the issues of stam yayin and yayin nesach are in Yoreh De'ah.

What can I say, a simple touch is all it takes, and NO looking at the bottle does not make it stam yayin.

Best Wishes,

David

I just tried to look all over Rav Ovadia Yoself's website (www.halachayomit.co.il), and couldn't fine things really on this issue. Would you happen to know the names of the particular responsa where he definitely states this (I am in the States right now, so I don't have access to my library)? It is simply know that Yalkut Yosef's p'saq follows more or less as I reported, and it is well known that all of Yalkut Yosef's p'saq's follow by his father's and thus if anything would be a chiddush it was originally from that source. I originally asked about what I read in Yalkut Yosef to a sephardic Rav who teaches in a Litvisch setting, and he told us that it is not just Yalkut Yosef but he told us (a group of majority Ashkenazim, actually) that it is the actual case.

I have been able to clarify so far from the Kitzur Yalkut Yosef on "Al eizeh yayin meqd'shin" that the --touch-- of a non-Jew or a non-Shabbat observant Jew on the wine being used for the Kiddush makes it asur to Meqadesh that wine, and should not do so. So while still remaining in the subject of stam yeinam, if the Meqaddesh'er transgresses this issur by doing it, he is still yotzei bedieved on his Kiddush.

Best wishes,

E.Y.

P.S. It should be known that I am obviously looking at these --other-- sections pertaining dinim of wine, because I am limited on print sources that I am carrying while travelling and to reliable references on the Internet.

I am backing off this whole issue as it is too touchy and depends on one's level of observance.  Either way I go I am going to tick someone off, so thanks and I hereby wave the white flag! :-)

What matters is that I loved the Festival and I end the discussion there!

With respect,
David

I wish in the future that when commenting on a forum topic people can stick to the topic listed otherwise it stifles a conversation on the original topic... I call it hijacking the discussion

here's an idea, if you're motivated or inspired just start a new thread under a new post and that way you'll get more feedback about the tangent you want to go off on without sidetracking someone else's debate

I may have been a minor transgressor in the past so this my act of contrition (as our Catholic neighbors might say)

David Raccah, what did you love about the Festival and why? What did you not like about it and why and are there any other wine festivals you'd reccommend?

Sure, here is my post on the festival, which includes what I liked, the wines I liked, and the wines I did not care for, and the "kashrut" issues that I reported on.  Again, the kashrut issues, are on the blog, and do not want to go over those again.
