Update as of 2/09 - still too early to drink. Fairly harsh still - it was not at all the great experience that I expected from the 2003 vintage. Oh well.

Barkan Merlot 2005

The 2005 doesn't seem to be as good as the older vintages IMHO. It was an OK merlot but seemed to need more aging (as of 10-08) - it was somewhat harsh and had a flat taste. Not spoiled, but certainly not a big winner. Maybe I should have waited a year before drinking.

Dalton Shiraz 2005

We loved this wine. Almost black in color, very peppery - full of flavor, strong shiraz aftertaste. The heavy body and 14.5% alcohol content tend to slow down consumption - not a bad thing. Drink with very full-bodied food. Next time I'm having it with barbecued steak.

I was a big fan of the earlier vintage but I think I just didn't wait long enough for this one. As of 3/08 it still needs time to mellow. The classic taste is there at the end of the swallow but before you get there you go past some harshness. It's not bad - but not terrific. I'll buy some more and be patient for a couple of years.

Galil Mountain Viognier 2006

I agree that it smells great. Maybe the taste is just acquired - but it didn't taste like a blend of chard. and gew. to me. It had a strong, unpleasant taste (but then again, so did scotch when I was 14- so maybe my palette isn't ready...). It wasn't spoiled - I think that it was just the grape type - my first experience with it and perhaps my last.

Carmel Young Moscato 2006

This is Carmel's candidate to compete with the Golan Moscato and it does compete. Not as sweet as the blue and Rashi Asti's. Nobody (including infants) will dislike this wine - but it's way too sweet for serious pairing with main courses. Re the competition: I would prefer the Golan Moscato, but the Carmel entry is around 30% cheaper. The Golan is not mevushal, the Carmel is mevushal (so Carmel wins for catered events.) Re Shabbat: This bottle has a metal screw top so if you don't open those on Shabbat then be warned.

Dalton Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2004

Nice color, sauv. blanc aroma, appealing fruity taste but fairly dry with no grassiness. Lingering aftertaste that is just very slightly bitter. We had it with chicken and it held up very well. Worth drinking slowly. Another winner from Dalton.
